So we’ve got a bit of welcome and pleasant news to report.

Those of you that regularly frequent our LAN center and ALSO use a microphone for either Ventrillo (or team chat, what have you) might be aware of the fact that several of the rear audio/mic ports on our machines are rather finicky. Some seem to have an intermittent short, while one is presumably picking up some random frequency, constantly broadcasting static over the mic whether or not a microphone is even plugged in!

Sadly, this issue wasn’t one of our highest priorities as not that many of our patrons regularly even use the microphones, and the resolution would involve spending some cash we could sooner put into some other projects we’d like to work on.

Thus swooped in Friday Night Frag Fest to the rescue!

Yesterday afternoon, two of the fragfellows dropped by with a pleasant surprise: sixteen (16) 6-channel PCI sound cards! Now, these certainly aren’t top of the line pieces of hardware – much to our appreciation, as we certainly don’t want anybody spending gazillions of dollars on lil’ old us – but they’re certainly on par (if not better) than our onboard sound, and there can be no disagreement that the friendly donation of sixteen sound cards is ABSOLUTELY an upgrade over onboard sound that ISN’T EVEN WORKING RIGHT.

So, when all is said and done, these guys single-handedly eliminated one of our more annoying and pervasive tech issues. Please, feel free to visit their site for more information about their LAN event, follow them on Twitter, or add yourself to their Facebook group. They’re among the store’s oldest friends and continue to support us.

Plus, you know, they’re throwing that LAN in June! Who wouldn’t want to keep up with that?

Game On! will close around 6 PM on Thursday December 24th so that we can all take a well-deserved break. We may re-open again Friday December 25th at 6PM but that is still under debate. We’ll tweet the results sometime before then so be on the lookout if that’s something you’re interested in.

In addition, we will be going as late as people want to stay on New Year’s Eve (December 31st) and opening again at around 6 PM on January 1st.

As always I would like to thank all the people who play in our LAN not just for hanging out but for being awesome company. Now that we’ve gotten to know some of you, it would feel lonely without.

A little belated–not as cutting edge as we might like–but we now have League of Legends installed on the computers in the LAN. The game itself strives to be better and bolder than DotA with vastly upgraded graphics and a slew of new items and heroes. Like Heroes of Newerth, it is entirely stand-alone and no longer relies of Warcraft 3 for its maps or characters.

The game has several characteristics that distinguish it from Defense of the Ancients. Every player is required to create a free account which then tracks their stats, friends lists, and various other information. Players, known in League of Legends world as Summoners, have a customizable talent tree, the ability to level as themselves (in addition to their Heroes leveling over the course of a match) and customize gameplay with various talents and runes.

In terms of game play, there are obvious similarities between LoL and games like DotA and HoN. It’s a single map with three paths, a.k.a. lanes, that players can take to reach the opponent’s base and eventually victory. What makes League of Legends unique however is the level of customization available to players (both for free and via collectors’ packs) and the matchmaking capabilities of the game.

To speak more of them, one has to address friends. With separate accounts for each player (absolutely free), users can add friends to their friends lists and chat with them through the LoL interface. This same list can be used to create matches where all friends are placed in a match on the same side (up to 5 people) and the matchmaking interface them pairs them up with other players of similar level and player count. In this fashion, friends can play together without the hassles inherent to Warcraft 3′s Battle Net.

So, the game is here and we welcome you to give it a try.

Last night, we met with the owners and operators of the other “Game On” that recently opened in Denver. The conversation, though starting out somewhat anxious and awkward due to the nature of the subject, grew to relative comfort and ease. Everybody in the room got along quite well and reached an agreement in a short amount of time. We made it clear that we had no intention of stepping on one another’s toes and, as it stands, they will be changing their name sometime in the next few weeks.

This will allow them to take full advantage of the exposure they recently received from the 9 News and Kotaku reports, while telling those who find them that their name will soon be changing. Should they ask for any assistance with the transition (e.g. signage, “game on”-related domain names, we recall a nifty rubber business stamp), we’ll undoubtedly do what we can to help out and pick up some of the slack.

To anybody who thinks that they may have “ripped us off”, let it be known that this is ABSOLUTELY not the case. The name and the logo are purely coincidental, and entirely likely combinations to arrive at in the course of making a games shoppe. Our only argument was that we’ve been developing our business as a name and wanted to protect the best interests of our “Game On!”, an argument of/with which they were 100% understanding and in agreement.

As far as the relationship between the two stores, there are no hard feelings whatever, and we might have even made a few new friends. They care every bit as much about gaming (as a community, concept, and medium) as we do, so there’s most definitely a likelihood of occasional cross-promotion, and perhaps even eventually co-sponsoring some of the same LAN events and cons that pop up in this city. We’ll see.

If you’ve just arrived at our site for the first time, and are looking for the “Game On” mentioned on 9 News and Kotaku, you can reach them at (303) 744-0313, visit their store at 2385 W. Alameda Avenue, or their temporary website at www.gameoncolorado.com.

We’d also like to thank everyone that offered support and advice during the periods of “not too sure what to do”. Your friendship is greatly appreciated, as is your business as customers. We couldn’t have made it this far without you.

Sincerely,
Game On

P.S. Make sure you keep an eye on this site. We ain’t done nothin’ yet.

To all visitors that have arrived at our site due to the article listed on Kotaku or the report on 9 News, let us first say that we are NOT the “Game On” mentioned. We are indeed an independently-owned new and used games shoppe and LAN center, though not the same store. The other “Game On” that recently opened up in Denver had already been brought to our attention, and we hadn’t yet decided how to approach the fact that we share the same name, though everyone here shared a strong preference for dealing with it privately, courteously, and without threat of litigation.

As far as we know, the other “Game On” has no online presence at this time, so we politely ask that you not send us E-mails regarding their situation. Your concerns are applaudable and though they did not arrive at the correct location, they did not fall on deaf ears. While we are sympathetic to the difficulties their staff has been through, personally, we are concerned for the state of our business and the fact that this other store has just received such strong national and local “promotion”. It would mean a great deal to us if you would look around our site for just a little while, and get to know us as well.

At this time, our inventory is modest in size, though containing a rich variety of both common and rare titles. Our LAN center boasts 16 PCs that are capable of playing every game we have on their highest resolutions and settings on 22″ widescreen monitors. We also offer PC repair services and are enthusiastic about individual service and education.

Our store is very interested in the promotion of gaming as a community and has taken steps towards working with local gaming presences, such as the upcoming Friday Night Fragfest, the local “Colorado Cutthroat Connection” chapter of the NVGA and their upcoming Supercon, as well as communicating with other pockets of gaming community in the state, such as Counterstrike clans and other business owners.

We regularly promote gaming news of interest on our Twitter and have recently been re-designing our website in order to launch new features, such as an event/new release calendar, while also incoporating the aforementioned Twitter onto the site itself. we’ve decided to launch this new site somewhat prematurely due to the sudden traffic increase on our website. Please forgive anything that looks either out of place or any areas that seem somewhat sparse. We are working on it.

Thank you for your visit and please accept our apologies for the misunderstanding.

Play through the campaigns to learn of the terrible war between the races of Azeroth – as well as Arthas’ delicious descent into madness – or simply get some good, old-fashioned RTS multiplayer going.

Or, as we’re sure some of you will, feel free to avail yourselves of some Defense of the Ancients (DotA), the insanely popular custom campaign.

As a sidenote, we’d like to remind you that you can keep an eye on our various activities either by joining our Facebook or Steam groups, or by following our Twitter or MySpace profiles.

To be perfectly honest, the most frequent and immediate updates are likely to happen either on this page or our Twitter, so be sure to check back often. Especially in the near future, as we’ll be trying to add some new functionality to the website.
